Sub-Saharan Africa - Essay ExampleThe Serengeti mammal population is considered the jumbost one in the world, which makes it a perennial visiting station for tourists from across the whole world (Partridge, 2006, May 20). The only part of geographical surroundings that allow relatively safe connection to the external environment is the south-east crater highlands, with the Ngorongoro Crater hosting a renewing of resident mammal population due to its abundant grass vegetation (p.32). The animal world of the Serengeti region is extremely diverse. When passing through the area, I encountered large herds of Blue Wildebeests, zebras and Thomsons gazelles, in addition to less prominent, but not less diverse, herds of various lesser wildebeests and gazelles. The wildebeest s of all types are the special attraction for all the visitors of Serengeti area, as they are increasingly involved in gargantuan-scale migrations that may encompass up to one million animals in them. On the Control People Have Over Their Behavior, Emotions, and Thoughts Essay

On the Control People Have Over Their Behavior, Emotions, and Thoughts - Essay typefaceIf he is in control, sound how much control does he have over these aspects of himself? This paper takes the position that we do not cognise what we be doing in most situations. We are not in control (Armstrong 22-38 Thurman 460-473 Stout 381-398). It is interesting how the different authors portray man. In a way their portrayal also defines what it sum for man to be free, and just how free he is in reality. Armstrong, for one, notes that man is not totally free to be anything, because he is hardwired to look for God. He is a religious being as much as he is descended from apes and has that particular anatomy. There in that vision of man on that point seems to be already a defining and a limiting of what man can be. He is not free to be anything he wants to be. He must by his very genius act, think and feel in accordance with his wiring. That wiring includes looking for God. Thurman also see ms to think the selfsame(prenominal) way, in a sense. He says that in essence the swelled head or the individual is not in control of himself, because the ego is always in flux. He is a bundle of passing thoughts, feelings, and actions. Stout seems to say the same thing, in the language of trauma and the human brain. She is saying that trauma, for instance, can affect the way mass perceive the world. Trauma changes the way the brain is wired. It is so that people are not in control of the way they react to things that remind them of traumatic events (Armstrong 22-38 Thurman 460-473 Stout 381-398). Discussion Reading Stout, for instance, we come face to face with just how vulnerable man is to trauma. Trauma can reshape the brain itself. With the brain reshaped, a persons thoughts and feelings are affected. Of course with the thoughts affected and changed in healthy ways, actions are likewise reshaped and affected. We see that man can be so affected by trauma as to be unaware that he is performing out of reason, for instance. It can be also that man can be unaware that he is acting out of a reaction to a late(prenominal) traumatic event. How much control does man have in this instance? Obviously man is not much in control. To be aware representation to know that ones actions are coming from a deep-rooted fear. People who experienced trauma sometimes do not know that. They are unconscious of the effect that fear and memory have on their feelings, thoughts and actions nor do we comprehend how swampy and vitality-sucking some of our memories really arein the course of a life sentencetime such protective mental reactions acquire tremendous habit strength (Stout 384).Stouts point is that there is much in man that he is not even aware of. Those things that he is not aware of largely control him. Those things affect how he feels and how he thinks. Those things affect how he reacts to the world and to his life as that life unfolds. So to the question of whether man knows what he is doing in most situations, it seems the answer from Stout is no. I agree. An ordinary man cannot know what all of his hidden fears are. sometimes even when he thinks he knows he does not really know why he acts the way he does. Sometimes I feel sad for no reason at all, after hearing an old song, for instance. It may be that deep in my memory there is something about the song that I associate with something sad or unpleasant. Traditionally based marriages already face a 50 percent divorce rate. As such, divorce has already weakened the institution of marriage an d forced us to redefine the meaning of marriage and family to include a previously married man or woman who has children of their own but has married again and created a new family dynamic in the process. By allowing marriage to accommodate a definition that give include fay marriage, it will seriously seem like marriage is an institution that is no longer taken seriously and is only an act put on for the public. Most importantly, there is a common denominator in the redefined marriage for divorced couples, the man and woman still have to and can produce new offspring. That is an act that a gay couple cannot accomplish through natural means and thus, makes a mockery out of marriage whose other purpose for being is to allow a man and a woman to legally procreate and propagate our species. (Messerli,Should Same Sex Marriage Be Legalized?) Since procreation is one of the main reasons wherefore marriage is thought of as a highly sacred act of unification between a man and a woman, we can also argue that one of the main reasons that we need to ban gay marriage in California is to protect the minds of our children from the corruption based upon the confusion they may experience once they come across a gay married couple. Think about it. We dont really care if a person is straight, bi, lesbian, or gay. We normally just let them be as long as they do not veer into territory where their existence can cause actual harm to certain sectors of our society such as our children. It is that area of our society that the controversial

Immigration in United States, From the view point of The Jungle Research Paper

Immigration in United States, From the view point of The Jungle - seek Paper ExampleThese were the changes that had been induced by the rise of the metropolis, the development of a national economy and, to a crucial extent, by the industrial revolution which has been viewed by highly educated people (including Sinclair) as the feverish mechanization of human life - arousing deep tensions and turbulences in the sociopolitical culture of the American society around 1890s. Sinclairs readers may ask whether the teddys in the culture of the Lithuanian immigrants, who occupy the central themes of the novel, will suffice the cultural transformations of the US society. But while asking the question, matchless has to bear in mind the fact that the novel presents a particular aspect of American society in which the societys socio-political-cultural variables of social transformations render other cultures to be assimilated and to be fused with its own cultural traits in order to produce an other which is more global and tolerant in nature. Consequently, the traits of the socio-political-cultural-economic transformation of the Lithuanian immigrants culture and their assimilations into the mainstream US culture serve as the prototype of the cultural changes of the US society around the first half of the 1960s. ... Then finally, they argon forced to adapt themselves and their culture to the changed circumstances. These adaptations necessarily yield into new cultural forms that are capable of surviving in the hostile environment of industrialization. The attempts of the Lithuanians to preserve their primal values, norms and traits of culture are evident throughout the whole novel. But in the beginning of the novel, the marital culture and other cultural values that are detect in an exuberant environment are livelier than in any other part of the novel. These nuptials customs of the Lithuanians prevail had to go through the inevitable transformations and have to adapt themselves to the changed circumstances of life in Chicago. Throughout the first six chapters, the Lithuanian marital customs such as the matchmaker episode, espouse ceremony, wedding feast, very often accompanied by music, wedding songs, dances etc attend to exist in more or less modified forms. As Suk Bong Suh says, Lithuanians seem to have preserved much of these traditional wedding customs in America, though in somewhat modified form. Among others, the detailed descriptions of the wedding feast, veselija, show graphically to what extent they tried to preserve their old customs in a new environment (Suh 11). Being the part of the agrarian society norms, the Lithuanian wedding tradition includes serving abundant foods and drinks during the marriage ceremony. As Sinclair remarks, It was one of the laws of the veselija that no one goes hungry, and, while a rule made in the forests of Lithuania is hard to agree in the stockyards district of Chicago, with its quarter of a million i nhabitants, still they did their best,

How does Telemachus Essay Example for Free

How does Telemachus EssayTo begin with, we meet Telemachus in book1 when genus Athene (goddess of wisdom) pertinacious to visit Odysseus son. The expectant Odysseus is in need of rescue and the gods have decided that it is time that the kleos (fame and glory that is often achieved in battle but is passed down from baffle to son). Telemachus is sent by Athena to build up his and his generates kleos. Telemachus is describe as constantly daydreaming about his long last father whilst 108 suitors take liberty on his xenia. We know Telemachus is favourable by the Gods straight way.We know this as when Athena comes knocking on his palace door, disguised as a family friend, he is more than welcoming. His hosting skills define him as well as his morals. With wise words of a mission from Athena, Telemachus beings to question the behaviour of the suitors which leave him discredited. Still in book 1, we instruct a glimpse of Telemachus loyalty and anger. With his mum crying selfishly over the bard, Phemius, singing about the death of Troy. Penelope, Telemachus mother, is described as selfish due to her crying over her economise.Telemachus reminds her that she was not the only one to loose someone and that Phemius should continue entertaining the suitors with his song. Although he snaps at his mother, this very foreshadows the importance of the coming events. Telemachus is about to help the great kleos obtained by his father in this 10 year battle. The misery of Penelope over the loss of her husbands shows how she is unable to get over his lost, even after though its been 20 days. He leaves his mother in tears as he leaves.Telemachus ponders over Athenas words of wisdom thus showing the influences of a Goddess already. Book two shows Telemachus believing more in his father but he still hasnt come out of his royal shell. He takes Athenas advice and dresses like Odysseus. With war-like attire, he assembles the suitors. An angry speech later leaves the suitors in shock. This shows Telemachus dominance and how easily influenced he is. Finally Telemachus decides to put the suitors in their place with shows real potential to his confidence growing. The suitors decided to blame Penelope for their extended mystify by her excessive teasing as well as false promises. Telemachus refuses to believe their words as he stays loyal to his mother. He tries to cling to her and gets back to the matter at hand. Telemachus leaves in the night on his journey however he does publish maid Eurycleia his plans. Sworn to secrecy she is unable to tell worrying Penelope. This also shows the trust and respect Telemachus has for his mother as he is trying to cause her as less pain as possible. We can see how loyal Odysseus family is to each other Penelope refusing to remarry and Telemachus travelling to find the truth even after the years have passed. Book three leads us into Nestors palace (a friend of Odysseus) to which we see Telemachus still being portrayed as a coward. In only an overnight journey, he is super nervous about offending the wise man with his questions or insulting him. The Greek stereotype of a man is a brave, young, courageous person. They must be almost God-like by obtaining great traits to show heroic strengths.Telemachus is definitely not this stereotype however a lot of Nestors sons are. This shows how Nestors sons have great kleos and heroic tendencies compared to Telemachus potential. Even though Telemachus is almost the opposite of a man in characteristics, he has potential to be as great as his father due to him being called god-like even when his traits would be to differ. Once again, Athena leads Telemachus to Nestors palace. Telemachus questions Athena on whether he is allowed to question an old ego proving Telemachus worries and yet morals to traditional actions.Peisistratus, one of Nestors sons, instantly takes them by the hand to offer them great xenia (forced hospitality) and welcomes them in thus showing how a young male of the same age as Telemachus is more confidant and braver than himself. This could show Telemachus potential when it comes to becoming a man. As soon as Nestor mentions the battle of Troy, it brings a tear to Telemachus eye. This is because of the multiple similarities Nestor points out between Telemachus and Odysseus, once again showing his potential to be his father.Telemachus is relying on Athena to help him without fail. By book four we start to see kleos in action. Upon meeting Menalus (an old king who also fought beside Odysseus in Troy) we see that Athena has unexpended Telemachus. This shows how braver Telemachus is as he starts to become independent as he is ready to meet Menalus. Peistratus is still accompanying Telemachus and is the first to speak to Menalus. His role is to support Telemachus and begins to put forward why they are there as well as introducing the King to Telemachus. We see Telemachus heroic stature coming through as he refuses Menalus brilliant gift. With charm flowing from him, he takes the news of his father in his stride as he hears about Clypsos island. Overall, Telemachus changes from a coward who spent 20 years daydreaming about a father he has never met to a strong god-like protagonist. Although he is not fully a man yet nor a hero, he is showing true potential as he is building his kleos up. He will become like his father if his progress continues. Telemachus is being sullen into a man with the help of Athena and family friends.

Essay of william Essay Example for Free

Essay of william EssayScepticism about technological determinism emerged alongside increased pessimism about techno-science in the mid-20th century, in particular around the use of atomic energy in the production of nuclear weapons, Nazi human experimentation during World War II, and the problems of economic development in the third world. As a direct consequence, desire for greater control of the course of development of engineering gave rise to disenchantment with the model of technological determinism in academia.Modern theorists of applied science and hunting lodge no longer consider technological determinism to be a very accurate view of the way in which we interact with technology, even though predestinationist assumptions and language fairly saturate the writings of many boosters of technology, the business pages of many popular magazines, and much reporting on technology. Instead, research in science and technology studies, social construction of technology and relat ed line of businesss have emphasised more nuanced views that resist easy causal formulations. They emphasise that The relationship between technology and federation cannot be reduced to a simplistic cause-and-effect formula. It is, rather, an intertwining, whereby technology does not determine but operates, and are operated upon in a complex social field (Murphie and Potts). In his article Subversive Rationalization applied science, Power and Democracy with Technology, Andrew Feenberg argues that technological determinism is not a very well founded concept by illustrating that two of the origination theses of determinism are easily questionable and in doing so calls for what he calls democratic rationalization (Feenberg 210212).Prominent opposition to technologically determinist thinking has emerged within rub down on the social construction of technology (SCOT). SCOT research, such as that of Mackenzie and Wajcman (1997) argues that the path of innovation and its social conseq uences are strongly, if not entirely shaped by participation itself through the influence of culture, politics, economic arrangements, regulatory mechanisms and the like. In its strongest form, verging on social determinism, What matters is not the technology itself, but the social or economic system in which it is embedded (Langdon Winner). In his influential but contested (see Woolgar and Cooper, 1999) article Do Artifacts Have Politics?, Langdon Winner illustrates a form of technological determinism by elaborating instances in which artifacts can have politics.Although The deterministic model of technology is widely propagated in society (Sarah Miller), it has also been widely questioned by scholars. Lelia Green explains that, When technology was perceived as being outside society, it made sense to talk about technology as neutral. Yet, this idea fails to piddle into account that culture is not fixed and society is dynamic. When Technology is implicated in social processes, ther e is nothing neutral about society (Lelia Green). This confirms one of the major problems with technological determinism and the resulting denial of human tariff for change. There is a loss of human involvement that shape technology and society (Sarah Miller).Another conflicting idea is that of technological somnambulism, a term coined by Winner in his essay Technology as Forms of Life. Winner wonders whether or not we are simply sleepwalking through our existence with little doctor or acquaintance as to how we truly interact with technology. In this view it is still possible for us to wake up and once again take control of the direction in which we are traveling (Winner 104). However, it requires society to adopt Ralph Schroeders claim that, users dont just passively consume technology, but actively transform it.In opposition to technological determinism are those who subscribe to the belief of social determinism and postmodernism. Social determinists believe that social circums tances alone select which technologies are adopted, with the result that no technology can be considered inevitable solely on its own merits. Technology and culture are not neutral and when knowledge comes into the equation, technology becomes implicated in social processes. The knowledge of how to create and enhance technology, and of how to use technology is socially bound knowledge. Postmodernists take another view, suggesting that what is right or wrong is dependent on circumstance. Theybelieve technological change can have implications on the past, present and future.6 While they believe technological change is influenced by changes in government policy, society and culture, they consider the notion of change to be a paradox, since change is constant.Media and cultural studies theorist Brian Winston, in response to technological determinism, actual a model for the emergence of new technologies which is centered on the Law of the suppression of radical potential. In two of his books Technologies of Seeing Photography, Cinematography and Television (1997) and Media Technology and Society (1998) Winston applied this model to show how technologies evolve over time, and how their invention is mediated and controlled by society and societal factors which suppress the radical potential of a given technology.
